David by Bernini at the Borghese Gallery

BORGHESE GALLERY

Queen of all private collections, the Borghese Gallery is one of the most impressive museums in Italy. In the XVII century Cardinal Scipione Borghese modeled his casino on the villas of classical Rome. Nephew of the pope Paul V Borghese, he used his income and position for indulging his love of fine living.

Great talent scout and avid collector, he managed to assemble works of rare beauty. Under those circumstances, guided by instinct and taste, he became the very first significant patron of a young Bernini. He managed also to gather more Caravaggios than anyone else, admiring the artist from the early days of his career. He did not hesitate at any rate in stealing what could not be obtained, as he did with Raphael’ Deposition.

Paolina Borghese by Canova is one of the icons of the gallery:  commissioned much later by the prince Camillo Borghese, the sculpture portrays his wife, Napoleon’s sister.

Furthermore, the villa is as impressive as the collection with magnificent stuccoes, marbles and frescoes.

By the way, the Borghese gardens form Rome’s largest park, shaded with oaks and umbrella pines: thus a perfect blend of art and nature.
